Pocket Doors and Porcelain Door Knobs

Kamis, 04 Agustus 2016

When we first found our home, one of the features that we loved the most was the original large pocket door separating the living and dining room.  It was still the original wood before we moved in, as were all the trim and built-ins in the house.  It also came with the original plates and glass door knobs.
Because we didnt really care for the dark stained wood trim, all of it was painted bright white right away throughout the house, which took weeks but it was so worth it.  The white really made the beautiful trim pop instead of just blending into the wood floor.  And we just loved how the pocket door looked with all the bright white paint.  One of the things we never thought to change was the door knob and backplate.
The current one was just not our thing, too Victorian and ornate, but it was one of those details that didnt really seem important so we left it there.  But it always bothered me a little.  I felt it didnt really go with our decor and it made me not really enjoy the pocket door as much as I wanted to.  So, I decided to change that.  I rummaged through my hubbys boxes of found vintage hardware, doorknobs, etc.,
and found some I really loved.
These vintage brass backplates and gorgeous white porcelain door knobs which I just LOVED.  The porcelain doorknobs are heavy (for a door knob) and I love that, too.  The several layers of paint needed to come off the backplates so I grabbed a can of spray stripper.
Warning:  This stuff is super strong and I actually hate using it but it does the job fast.  Use it with care, outside with gloves and a mask.  Heres how they looked after.
I was actually planning to spray paint the backplates with oil rubbed bronze spray paint but I liked them so much after stripping them that I decided to leave them as is.  Hubby and I removed the old hardware and attached these and I LOVE the difference.   (I also gave the pocket door a fresh coat of ultra white paint.)
It may seem like a small detail but sometimes those can make a big difference because we are loving our pocket door much more now.  I love the straight lines of this door knob backplate instead of the ornate look of the other one.
As you can see it is quite large.  We dont shut it often but it certainly comes in handy from
time to time.  And it really is a beautiful door.
Heres the "before" from the other side.
And after.....
Again, small detail, but big change to us.
Im so glad I didnt spray paint the backplates.  Im crazy about this change and think it goes with our home so much more.  And it was FREE!  Now, I guess I better get to work on the other doors.
P.S.  We just repainted our dining room.  If youre interested, the color is called Classic Gray by Benjamin Moore.  :)  The paint on the trim and pocket door is called Ultra White by Valspar.

HOW THE MAGIC HAPPENS blue black and white dresser

SO when the rain comes before expected sometimes my furniture doesnt get
photographed the way I would like.
Case in point this blue dresser.
On a lovely warm sunny day Ill pull something out of storage and start working in the yard.
Ill fix all the broken bits including drawer glides, and replace missing drawer guides.
Nailing a backer on, and glue a chipped drawer corner back in place.
At some point I decide what color Im going to start with,
this day it was blue for a piece Shelly had done over at A LITTLE BIT OF SHIZZLE
I wasnt trying to reproduce her work of art,
its just the piece that inspired the color choice of the day.
Ive added a link to see more of Shellys work at the bottom of this post.
Masking, spraying, distressing, and waxing all happens before installing new hardware.
A finish for the top gets underway.
Once finished but before I can move things around to style for photos,
the rain comes or even simple life happens.
So this is what happens .....
Photo editing!
It doesnt happen too often because I work hard at getting good photos,
but it is a necessary evil when you have bad lighting, bad weather, or limited time.
Pop over to see more of Shellys masterpiece at A LITTLE BIT OF SHIZZLE:

A HUSBAND AN ANTIQUE AND A POST CARD aqua chest of drawers

Just a quick peek for you.
George bought a little antique dresser last week and very
excitedly arrived home with it in his van anxious to show me.
Looking at it in the back of the van, I have to admit
I was perplexed because it looked nice as is.
I had assumed it was for me to work on.
He knows my motto
"if its not broke dont fix it"
It had rich color in the wood, beautiful hardware
but once I get closer I realized how short it was,
at about 27". We have been looking for a special
piece for ourselves to fit along a low window.
Now this started to make sense, however it also has
to be very shallow which this was not at 20" deep.
NOT GONNA WORK FOR US
i love you george
I have been toying with the idea of turquoise
and now I have to come up with a plan to refurbish
the thing.  Of course the first thing was
to put some casters back on it to give it a bit more
stature. Then George shows me some repairs that it
needed. The insides of the cabinet and drawers
definitely would benefit from attention. The top
surface varnish was bubbled all over.
Okay this is sounding better, I like to be needed.
But I didnt have a clear vision and it was sitting in the middle of my work space and something
had to happen. The top couldnt be painted without being stripped.
If I have to strip it I want to stain it dark walnut. Thats a start! That will go with turquoise.
So I removed the top to take outside to do the dirty work.
When removing it I found something, half a post card stuck
between the frame and the top.
Addresser was:
Mr David Brown
1256 Davie St.
Vancouver BC
It reads "arrived at _____ johston. He is a big boy,
was asking for you. The picture on this card is the
hotel I stayed at in NY"
signed: "Father"
 See the post mark?
 1919
Okay now back to the dresser
 Trial and Error ....
I finally ended with something I adore ...
Let me know what you think ....
