Six Steps to Keep Towels Soft

Selasa, 16 Agustus 2016

keep towels softYesterday, I decided I COULD NOT TAKE IT any longer. That is, I could no longer take drying off from a shower using my grey (they were once white), crunchy (as my son calls them) towels.
A sale was on at Kohls. This was my opportunity. So, with my coupon and Kohls cash in hand, I headed out to restock my towels.  I checked Kohls towel ratings online, and then spent a good 15 minutes feeling all the towels for optimum softness. I ranked Jennifer Lopez towels as the softest, which makes complete sense as they are designed by a Diva. However, I went with the Sonoma, which were still soft and were a good $10 cheaper a towel, which also makes complete sense as these were not designed by a Diva.
When I got home, I immediately yanked out all my old towels and then....filled my linen closet with the new fluffy white ones. Pure domestic joy!!
But this time around, I wanted to be sure my towels stayed white and soft for as long as possible. What could I do to prevent these towels from the same dingy fate of my old towels? After some research, I discovered that with any towel, softness can disappear after only a few washes due to hard water, excessive detergent and the use of fabric softener. Who knew??
So here is the best advice I found for keeping new towels white and fluffy....
6 Steps to Keep Towels Soft
  1. Use less Detergent. Too much detergent eventually coats the towels fibers and leads to the dreaded crunchy towel. Use about half as much detergent as normal, so the rinse cycle can fully rinse out the detergent and wash in hot water to let the heat sanitize the towels
  2. Do not use fabric softeners or dryer sheets. Who new??? Fabric softener actually damages your towels by building up on the fibers and pushing the fabric down. Fibers stiffen and become less absorbent.
  3. Wash & dry fewer towels in each load. Smaller loads in the washer allow your machine to rinse out detergent better. Smaller loads in the dryer allow the air to fluff up the fabric.
  4. Use vinegar. Vinegar is great for removing almost any buildup. Use about 1 cup of vinegar with only a little detergent and it will help remove detergent buildup and hard water stuck in the fiber or your towels. Not only will this keep the fibers fluffy and soft, but it will keep your towels absorbent.
  5. Use baking soda. Occasionally add half a cup of baking soda to your detergent. This will help to loosen up towel fibers and clean off any buildup. This also helps eliminate any odors.
  6. Use a water softener. This was a great recipe for homemade water softener that I found at  www.hotelathome.net. This is good to use occasionally instead of vinegar if your water is hard. (This recipe also works great at restoring softness to older towels that you arent ready to toss).
Using a 2liter bottel that you have labeled as water softener....
From www.hotelathome.net...
  • The recipe. In the jug, pour a ½ a cup of Borax (available in most grocery store laundry sections) and a one cup of washing soda (sodium carbonate, sometimes called "lectric soda", also available in the laundry section) and 1/2  fill the jug with very hot water.
  • Mix well. Mix the solution until the powder mixture has completely dissolved.  Pour this mixture into your 2 litre bottle and then fill the rest of the bottle up with water.
  • Softening your water. To use your homemade water softener, add one cup to each load of laundry, for particularly crunchy towels, you may need to add two cups of the mixture.

HOW TO TAKE BORING TO BEAUTIFUL tall white sideboard

I get asked often where I get the appliques I use on my furniture projects.
There is no one answer other than everywhere.
This fabulous piece above was bought at a yard sale last summer.
It is a flat backed picture frame.
The hanger was unscrewed and the cardboard that was in it was removed,
then simply screwed to this door panel from the back side.
I customized this door panel for this vintage sideboard, it seems someone had an accident with
the glass that use to be there.
Minor repairs where needed from top to bottom on it but it is was a great find.
With my refined taste (wink) the interior of the full length drawer just wasnt going to pass muster.
Ink stains on plywood to the right and red felt sheading on the left, it was gross!
Never mind the large number of leftover sewing pins wedged in the corners,
that I did get attacked by.
I told George it was a rattle snake bite but he didnt buy it.
But when this is the finished result Ill let the snake bite fade away in my memory.
All the doors went from flat to fab with a bit of simple molding trim
and perfectly placed appliques.
The 2 side door appliques were found at a local RE-STORE.

The drawer and cupboard all got a pretty blue and white damask wallpaper lining.
This damask print can be found at Home Depot in BLACK, LIGHT BLUE, and LIGHT GREEN.
HEATHERs CABINET
The back was falling off so I decided to take it all the way off to line the interior.
Much easier this way.
More rogue sewing pins came out from every corner to play.
I was having none of it this time.

Come on in and get the 50 cent tour.
NEW Bedroom - AFTER
Guests are due to arrive soon and the temperary bedroom make-over is complete.
We hope Georges family enjoy it.
OLD Showroom - BEFORE
I took our front entry as well as where we usually show most of my furniture,
and transformed it into a pretty and comfortable guest bedroom.

This is a 136" x 69" room, thats just over 11 feet long by just under 6 feet wide.
Bedroom
$3 yard sale faux wood blinds I spray painted white and of course the vintage lamp I rewired for you.
Showroom
Georges granddaughter gets her own hooks to hang stuff and my beloved iron stool to sit on,
or climb on to reach all the neat things.
BEFORE seen above
AFTER seen below
The quilted green pillow shams are from our last Florida trip
and the king size yard sale quilt was only $15.
I built a custom sized bed because the room isnt big enough. We chose to used the Queen size
BYOB mattress (camping air mattress) because it would be flexible with the fit.
I built a raised platform underneath so the girls have tonnes of room to hide their luggage.
There is also extra foam and padding between the wood platform and the air mattress.
I hope they have some great nights of sleep, cause George plans to run them ragged.
Me thinks he forgets hes dealing with a 4 year old.

THE CHALLENGE TO WORK WITH ORANGE patio for patrick

With a bit of extra time on my hands these past few days I have
gotten started on the patio. A dear friend along with George have
both challenged me to work with orange this time around. Both of
them know I cant ignore an out right challenge ... buggers!!!
Its just a start so far as I have had a great deal of cleaning from the
show as well as finalizing the latest Best Buy NSO (new store
opening) floor plans to get out of the way.
Heres a night shot with some of Georges white lights.
This painting was found while yard sailng with my sister last month.
Im also working on this fun little table for the patio. When I bought
it is was covered in a hideous brown red paint, which has taken a
very long time to strip. It is still in its DURING stage. There is also
a small glimpse of my solid Amber Alabaster lamp base which
I hope to incorporate into the patio decor.
