Christmas Advent Calendar DIY

Sabtu, 30 April 2016

Ive always wanted to make my own Advent Calendar and every year I never do.  It seems that whenever I finally have the time, December is half over and it seems kinda silly to make one at that point.
But this year, I did it.  And Im so happy with how it turned out.
It is Pottery Barn inspired and it cost less than $20 to make.
To start, I picked up a some little white mini metal pails at the Dollar Tree in the wedding favor section.  They come in packs of 3, so I bought 9 in order to have 25 pails.  I brought them home and spray painted them with chrome colored spray paint to give them a galvanized metal look.  You could also use galvanized metal pails but I couldnt find any locally, so, this was the next best thing.
After all the pails were dry, I attached numbers to the front with double sided tape.  Heres the printable I used for my numbers.  For some reason there were only 24, so, I found a 25 online that was similar and printed it out as well.
Next up was the frame.  I picked up 6 - 3 x 6s at Lowes and cut them down to have 7 - 32 inch long boards.
I laid them front side down and attached two beams with screws to the back to keep them together.
After that was finished, I stained the entire piece with Minwax dark walnut stain.  (sorry, no picture)
I wanted to frame the piece to give it a finished look and to also hide the beams in the back, so, I measured the sides and bottom and cut each piece at a 45 degree angle to create a frame around it.  I made sure to buy 2 extra 3 x 6s for the frame and then just turned them on the side and attached with a nail gun.
Then I stained those as well.
To hang the little pails, I wanted to use something unique, so, I picked these vintage styled nails that I found in hubbys collection.
I basically just eyeballed everything and created 5 rows of 5 nails for the 25 pails, predrilling holes first.  I hung all the little pails and then stenciled JOY at the top with vintage stencils and heres how the whole thing turned out....
I think this is one of my favorite projects to date!  Im so glad I made the time to try making one before December was half over.  :)
I cant wait to hide little treats and notes in those little pails for my kids and hubby to find each day until Christmas.  It will give them big smiles and they will love it...  :)
Stay tuned for how it looks in the room and more Christmas decor coming up!
Have a great day!

DIY Love Mirror Bedroom Updates

Greetings!  I hope you all had a lovely weekend.  Ive said this before but anytime I make a special change in a room, it always seems to inspire other changes, as well.
This past week I finally got around to changing out our master bedroom and bath door knobs and plates to the match the porcelain door knobs I put on our pocket door.  I got lucky and found just what I needed in my hubbys collection.  I was planning to just change them and be done with it but I was so happy with the results that I put a fresh coat of paint on the doors and then decided to also paint our bedroom Classic Gray by Benjamin Moore.
I love it so much in our dining room and since our master bedroom is right off the dining room, I thought it was a logical choice.  I just wasnt happy with the dark paint in our bedroom anymore.
Well, this led to me wanting to improve the art work in our room, as well.  Besides the barn door behind our bed, there really isnt much on our walls in the bedroom and truth be told, our bedroom is the room we stash everything in, though it doesnt look like that from the photos.  But Ive never shared the other side of the room with you, which is usually where everything is piled up.  :)
Anyway, I wanted to put a mirror of some sort above our Anthropologie inspired dresser, so, I scoured the internet with ideas and came across this photo.
I absolutely loved the somewhat whimsical, chic simplicity of it and knew I could create a fun version for our bedroom.  Heres what you need.
This mirror cost less than $30 to make.  I used two boxes of mirror tiles from Lowes, 1 x 2s and a  sheet of ceramic tiles.  (You need to remove the little square tiles from the sheet.)  First thing I did was build a frame with the 1 x 2s.  My frame is 3 feet x 4 feet, which is the size of 12 tiles.
I put the whole thing together with our nail gun.  Next, I attached a piece of scrap wainscot to the top of the frame with finishing nails.  Dont worry if it doesnt fit your frame perfectly.
Before I moved on to the next step, I wrote all our love sayings on each individual mirror tile with a silver permanent marker.  I chose our sayings from cards that I save from my hubby and kiddos.  I always save the cards they give me and this worked out perfectly.  Its best to have that step finished before attaching the tiles to the frame.  Then I applied mirror adhesive to the frame and began laying down my tiles.
These photos arent as great because it was late at night when I was working on this part.  After laying down all the tiles, I took the tiny ceramic tiles and glued them to each center connecting all four corners.
Then I painted the frame white to match the ceramic tiles.  After that, I cleaned off all my fingerprints, let it cure overnight flat on the ground and then attached a wire and two screw eyes to the back to hang it on the wall.  Heres how it looks in the room.
This mirror just makes me smile every time I walk into our bedroom.  Its fun and whimsical and I love how each saying reminds me of a special occasion with my family.
I also love the generous size of it.  You could also make a smaller version though, if you needed to.  I know this kind of art isnt for everyone but it sure makes us happy!
Have a great day!

DIY Vintage Equestrian Feed Sack

I never seem to be quick enough with the auctions on Ebay.  I always lose.  And its so frustrating, right?  Not so long ago, I missed out on a couple of amazing feed sacks that I really really wanted.  Thought I had them, but lost in the last few seconds, literally.  I couldnt seem to find anymore like them anywhere so I just decided to try making them myself.  It took forever, mainly trying to figure out just the right font to use, and then cutting out all those letters.  But luckily, its summer and sometimes its pretty relaxing to sit and cut things out like when we were kids, right?
Heres how I made them.....
To start, I washed and bleached a couple of pieces of dropcloth, dried them and laid them out flat to start stenciling on the words and art.  The fonts I used are available for free download on 1001freefonts.com.
The font I used for the TRAINERS CHOICE sack was called Libel Suit.
The font used for the word OATS is called Steelfish.
And the font used for the words FOR RACEHORSES is also Steelfish.
Fonts used for the JOCKEY OATS artwork is all Steelfish.
You can play around with the sizes.  I dont remember the font sizes that I used because I tried so many different sizes.  It really depends on the size of the piece youre going for.  Both my framed "sacks" are 22 x 28" so they would fit into a 22 x 28 inch sized poster frame that I picked up at Walmart.
The horse and jockey artwork is easy to find online, just google horse silhouettes.
After I had all my letters and artwork printed and cut out to use as stencils, I laid them on my dropcloth to determine their position.
To get just the right color, I used craft paint and mixed together 1 part Skyline with 2 parts Steel Gray.
Then I started stenciling it on lightly.  Make sure that you dont completely paint in the letters.  Otherwise it wont look aged and original, it will look like you painted on fabric.
I could have actually gone lighter here but this was my first experiment.  I stenciled the artwork on first and then did the words around it.  It seemed to be easier to get everything even that way.  And thats it!
I absolutely love how they turned out.
My hubby brought home this fantastic green piece in the photo above from a storage auction.  It was originally wood but the stain was in bad shape and the hardware was dated.  So, I replaced the hardware with something better, painted it this amazing shade of green, Valspar Homestead Resort Olive, and then distressed it with Minwax special walnut stain and wiped off.  I wish I had remembered to take a before photo so you could see the sorry shape it was in.  I am loving the pop of green color.
As you can see Ive updated with pillows and the same curtains I added to our den.  The blue pillow fabric came from here.  The bird pillow I made by stenciling a bird silhouette onto green fabric that I already had.
My thoughtful hubby picked up that sweet old oar behind the couch at an auction.  It was in perfect condition and I think its lovely.  :)
The green seed stock sack I actually did find on Etsy several months ago, so of course, I made a pillow out of it.  Im crazy about that green color.
Also, see that vintagey looking record player on the bookshelf?  My hubby bought that for me because I absolutely love listening to old Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald albums.  Problem was, it was a color that I didnt care for, burgundy.  Can you paint those??  Well, I sure did!!  I taped off the dial in the center and just spray painted the whole thing white.  Love it!!
If you have anymore questions about the DIY sack and art, Ill answer them in the comment section!  :)

DIY Window Boxes

Hey there!  I have been an absent blogger lately, right?  Ive been so busy and the weather has been just lovely, so its been hard to plop myself down in front of the computer.  Our kiddos are just about finished with school for the summer and I. Cant. Wait!  No more getting up at the crack of dawn to get everyone out the door on time.  Staying up late and sleeping in.
But best of all, spending time with my kids.
We love summer!!
So, Ive been busy doing more fun projects around the exterior of our house.  See, after 6 years of wanting needing a privacy fence in our back yard, we finally put one up and couldnt be happier.  It looks so much better and as a result, Ive been adding things weve always wanted to here and there.  Starting with landscaping the side of our home.  Its always been rather dull so we took the plunge there, too.  We waited until shrubs went on sale for half price so landscaping the side wasnt costly, just a little hard work.
Last year my boys gave me a hydrangea bush for my birthday that I planted along this side, however, it needed some company, so we added some white azaleas, a favorite of mine.  I still thought there was something missing and have always wanted window boxes, but didnt want to spend the money or buy the typical iron variety.  My good friend Lisa, who also happens to be my neighbor, made the coolest window box for her gorgeous front window a few years ago and Ive always admired it.  So, I did what all good friends do, I shamelessly copied it.  :)  Heres how I made mine.
The only thing I bought for this project was the pots and flowers.  Actually, my wonderful hubby bought them for me for Mothers Day. :)
Everything else was scrap around our house.
I started with 1 x 12s that I cut to be the same length as the lower ledge of the window.
Then I took my pots, turned them upside down and placed them on the wood, then traced with a pen.
For the long double window, I needed 4 pots so I evenly spaced them and traced.  Do NOT cut yet!
The next step is to trace another circle inside that one that is about a 1/4 inch smaller in diameter.  The pot will sit inside the circle at the lip.  Then I cut each circle out with a jig saw.
After lightly sanding the rough edges, I painted the entire piece white.  Notice the almost finished fence!  I also was able to remove the chicken wire fence I put around our veggie garden to keep the deer out.  Yay!
Set the boards aside and let dry.  Next up are the brackets the ledge will sit on.  I already had 4 of these from another project but I wanted them to be a little sturdier so I added a piece of 1 x 3 to the back of each one and secured with screws.
Then I painted those white, as well.  After they are dry, I attached them right under the window leaving about an inch gap between the top of the bracket and the under side of the window ledge for the top to fit in.  Next I placed the ledges on top of the secured brackets, secured them with screws to the brackets, and placed the pots that I filled with the gorgeous red flowers inside.  Heres how it looks.
And the other window.
I LOVE them!   I think what inspired me to do this was the lovely chocolate terra cotta pots available now.  I am crazy about them and wanted to find a way to showcase them.  Hopefully, the window ledges take your eye away from the ugly electrical garbage on this side of the house.  I cant wait till these bushes have filled in a little and are full of beautiful flowers.
So thats it!  Thank you to my friend, Lisa for the great idea!
Happy Summer!

DIY Smocked Burlap Curtains

Sabtu, 19 Maret 2016

Hello!  Anyone else ready for Spring as much as I am?  Winter always makes me feel a bit lazy because really, if its brutally cold, which it has been, the only thing there is to do is sit around and stay warm somehow.  So, what better time for a sewing project.  Especially one that will take a lot of time  And this one did.
Ive seen these smocked jute burlap curtains floating around blog land for a while now but seriously, $150 for ONE panel??  No thanks.  I would never spend that kind of money for one curtain panel, I dont care how much I loved them.  And boy did I love them....
I wondered if I could make them but smocking fabric sounded hard and looked time consuming and I would need a lot of burlap for my tall windows.  Well, the opportunity presented itself recently when last week a friend and I needed to purchase a lot of burlap to use as a table cloth and decor at a Homecoming banquet.  Heres a pic of the gorgeous barn where the dinner was held.
It was so much fun!  Anyway, we had all that burlap left over so we split it and I decided to make the curtains with it.  The burlap we bought was perfect, not too thick and not too thin.  Just right and just right in cost, too.  It can be purchased here.
Now, I had no idea how to smock fabric so I looked for the best possible tutorial I could find and did I find a great one.  Click here for that.  I probably wouldnt have been able to figure it out if it wasnt for that step by step.
So, I grabbed by burlap, got cozy and warm in a chair with a good movie playing in the background and sewed for hours.  At first it takes forever but once you get the process down, it goes so much faster.  By the time I made my second panel, it was going a lot quicker.  I am so happy with how they turned out and cant believe I did that when I look at them.
Call me crazy but I actually like the look of wrinkled up burlap, especially with these curtains, so I wadded up the panels when they were finished to make them look a bit more casual and rustic.
I love these so much that I just might have to buy more burlap and make some for our bedroom.
The sun was shining so strong in the window and I loved it.  Its the first time the sun has been out in a week or more.
So what do you think?  Are you going to make some too?  Send me photos if you do, Id love to see them!
Have a great day!

Try Diy Woodworking

Try Diy Woodworking
In woodworking, as time goes by, you realize that will need more than one saw in your shop. Beginning woodworkers tend to primarily purchase miter saws and table saws. In order to purchase tools that will serve you properly as you gain more experience, you need to know what to look for in a saw. A great tip for gaining inspiration or information on more DIY projects is to check out woodworking stores that sell discounted tools and woodworking shows can be a great source as well.
How to Choose a Woodworking Saw
Many times the first and most important power tool people buy for their workshop is the table saw. Typically, voltage for saws come in 120 or 240. Normal household circuits take 120 voltage for saws. For 240 voltage, a dedicated circuit is required. Most of the time a 120 volt saw will suffice, but if you require more power you can get an electrician to put in a dedicated line for you. Usually only professionals, who have regular use for their saw, require 240 voltage.
Take these things into consideration:
Motor power
Left or right tilt direction
Capacity of dust collection; too much dust can be a health hazard and can be a mess to clean
Fence Accuracy; you want a fence that will be easy to use and adjustable.
Woodworking Miter Saws
It can be daunting when you are trying to pick out a Miter saw because there are so many options out there on the market. When working with wood, they are one of the most important pieces of equipment because they handle cutting angles precisely and quickly. If you want to narrow down your options when choosing a saw, an important source of information is reading reviews.
Furniture making projects and replacing trim for your entire house are examples of big jobs that are great for Miter saws. In terms of the entire appearance, a tight Miter can make a big difference. Two options for miter saws are to either use them on the ground or on a stand. The stand option is best when you have to cut a lot of wood.
Jigs for Woodworking
Woodworking jigs, which tend to be an essential part of a diverse-array of projects, increase accuracy and save time. When you need to create many pieces, using jigs can not only be much faster, but can ensure that all pieces are identical. You end up with more professional and consistent results. Depending on the type of project and the desired results, you can determine what jigs you need.
Woodworking supply shops will sell jigs, but you may be able to find cheaper options on the internet. Consider making your own jigs if you’d like to save more money. You don’t want to spend too much money on expensive wood when making them, because usually, they are used only once.
Most Common Jigs
Taper jigs are used for tapering table legs, chair legs, and other furniture.
V bock jigs are great for boxes and frames.
Dovetail jigs can aid in making dovetail joints.
