VANCOUVER ART subway art tall dresser

Ive been wanting to do a true tall boy subway dresser for some time.

And recently a couple of my fellow blog ladies have inspired me to get moving on that project.
First up is Bliss @ Bliss Ranch with her Kodak Dresser.
http://blissranch.blogspot.ca/2012/04/my-kodak-moment.html/

And secondly is Suzan @ Simply Vintageous
 http://suzyq-vintagous.blogspot.ca/2012/04/my-ny-subway-dresser.html
My main inspiration started with this fabulous shaker style tallboy @ Lindauer Designs
http://www.lindauerdesigns.com/nyc-subway-sign-dresser/
But I had to do it in the VANCOUVER style,
and add what Im calling my signature typo.
Only those who know Vancouver should be able to find the spelling mix-up,
but for the most part you read it the way you are suppose to.

Next time Ill share how I transformed this mid century look into a shaker style,
in a few steps.
Let me know if you see the typo ...

VANCOUVER SNOW FALL winter photographs

Yesterday I mentioned our big snow fall, well I made sure I got the evidence to show you.
All these photos were taken in our yard.
I was playing with some editing features on the pictures when the big oil truck
arrived to deliver our furnace fuel. Earlier that day I had shoveled the regular pathway to the tank
through the thick snow. Little did I know the only one to benefit from this would be me.
In the form of a good workout.
We ordered the fuel long before the snow was forecast and now I was
worried there would be some trouble getting the truck up the driveway.
George told me not to worry but he was also not going to be home
to deal with the delivery if anything went wrong.
The beginning of our driveway has a quick incline but the driver made it up first try.
(YAHOO!)
Unfortunately he needed to be turned around to access the filler hose.
So he backed down the driveway and turned around on the road to make a second attempt.
He informed me we had to use the shortest route to the tank
due to a shorter filler hose then they normal carry.
This meant stopping the truck in the middle of the incline
and then hoisting the hose up a bank and dragging it through the heavy snow.
(THIS DIDNT SOUND GOOD)
The driver stopped the truck and had to set some things up from inside the cab leaving me to freeze on the bank for almost 10 minutes. When he finally got out to open the side to access the hose
the truck started to slide on its own down the driveway as he stood in shock watching.
I was looking down watching this whole process kinda like a movie going wrong.
Now dont worry ...
just then he found his wits and managed to hop back in the cab and get control of the situation.
But now with all the tire treads on the snow it was pretty packed down and slick.
(THIRD TIMES A CHARM?)
He started from the bottom again.
He finally managed to position the truck tires in the heavier part of the snow.
Working together we dragged the hose up the bank, through the deep snow all the way to the tank
and we got the tank filled. All the while hoping the truck wasnt going to move on its again.
(WE DID IT!)
Guess who arrived home just as we finished getting the hose
back through the snow down the hill to the truck.
(WELCOME HOME GEORGE)
"No you didnt miss anything honey"

CHANGING GEARS vancouver subway art dresser

I did it in reverse!
Rather than the black background of my first Vancouver Subway Art dresser
Ive finished this next one in white.
It started as a beat up, orangie colored, tall boy.
The drawers were is good shape but the runners and glides had to be replaced
thats why they look so wonky in this photo.
The top was removed to refinish and
the drawers were removed for the repairs I had to do inside the cabinet.
On a beautiful sunny day I sprayed the body in ASCP Old White
and stripped the top to be re-stained and waxed.
You can find a side by side before and after pic here.

Kasey is in her first year of learning to drive and last night she chauffeured us into town to visit the Fair Trade MarketAt the front door you are greeted by music, the small of fresh brewed coffee, and these fun reversible totes.
Displayed in the drawer of one of my furniture pieces is a large array
of brightly colored bangles.
There are many beautiful pieces of hand made jewelry to choose from.
A large selection of silver filigree pieces great for holiday gifts and
maybe they have that special piece for an up coming Holiday event.
Warm wool hand made blankets
Certified Organic Himalayan Tea with silk shoulder bag
A large selection of flavored honey including Blackberry, Peach, Ice Wine, and Raspberry
PJs in just about any color and size you can imagine
The space is filled with vibrant textiles everywhere you look including scarves
bibs for your little ones
and aprons for all ages and styles.
There are some striking patterns in black and white, vintage sheet music, and more.
Kasey and I were poking through the endless selection of beverage sleeves in fun prints,
they have one for every discerning hot beverage drinker out there.
And of course there are some beautiful, dynamic, gorgeous, and well priced furniture
items you must get in there to see.

ART DECO TURNED SHAKER vancouver subway art dresser

How to take an Art Deco Dresser and give it a Shaker Style.
One thing that dates art deco furniture is the flush and rounded tops.
So I removed the original top and replaced it with a nice fresh pine board cut to size.
With some walnut stain, wax, and my new gloves we were off to the races.
Having a curvy kick at the bottom is common in a lot of furniture
but I removed this one to get straighter lines and offer a masculine feel.
Two final steps to help achieve the look was to add the vintage metal wheels
and simple metal knobs down both sides of the drawers.
And thats how you get a shaker look from an Art Deco Dresser.
More beauty pics can be seen on yesterdays post
Next time Ill share how I did my lettering and finish on the drawers.
